92 Degrees. Head for the Pier!

Man, it was hot yesterday!  At lunch I looked to Christopher St. pier as a breezy escape. Bad idea. No shade, no breeze, breathing labored in the heavy air.  Most were clearly dressed for the weather.  Do they have jobs?  Us business casuals baked up and down the boardwalk.

After walking for 5 minutes I felt the need to jump in the water.  Head first.  Bring it on, Hudson.  But I pulled back — stuck a hand in the fountain and closed my eyes. Paradise, almost.

Nothing Like Bagpipes to Cut Through NYC Rush Hour Noise

I’m serious. This guy was a welcomed distraction and placed an interesting and fresh mood in the air around Madison Square Park this morning. Really good street musician.

Another East River Evening

Growing up I remember mentions of the East River on the news or sitcoms to be, let’s just say negative. Now that I live in New York, I have an entirely different view.  Yes, times have changed.  The city is a safer place, which is a huge factor.  But if you already read my “Faces of the East River” post a while back, you’ll know, it can simply be the way you view the river that makes the difference.  This is a beautiful and inspiring stretch of New York.  The night time joggers, the strollers, the gazers and the ones who just don’t want to go home just yet, we all find something in the river that changes us, that gives us a new idea or triggers a memory, if for only a brief moment.  I hope these photos do the same for you.

* For the photographers out there, I don’t do HDR. These are all single shots adjusted only for normal color and tone. Everything else is in camera white balance and a trusty flashlight that I used for the first time to add light to the rocks/wood while taking long exposures.

The Fountain of Youth? In New York City?

Come to Madison Square Park and your eye will find a million different goodies to focus on.  The playground, the greenest grass in all of Manhattan, the art installations that always seem to cause controversy — it’s a beautiful place to explore. Perhaps the biggest attraction (besides the Shake Shack, of course) is the fountain.  Added in 1867, this eternally flowing fountain brings a peaceful, constant serenity.  And the kids love it.

Visit http://www.madisonsquarepark.org for more information on the park. Check the schedule for concerts and other great events.

6th Avenue Sun-day

With the rain still coming down and clouds seemingly stuck over the city, I thought it’d be nice to remember how beautiful the weekend was. I took this while walking down 6th avenue.

Who’s That Guy in Gramercy Park?

Would you believe me if I told that there is a statue in Gramercy Park dedicated to the brother of the man who shot Abraham Lincoln?  You should.  It turns out, Edwin Booth was a pretty good guy.  Despite his brother’s tarnishing of the family name to eternity, Edwin lived an inspired life as an actor in New York City. He founded the Booth Theatre on 23rd and 6th and converted his home at the south end of Gramercy into a club, The Players Club, for acting professionals (and a few other select members).  Click here to read more about Edwin Booth.

Le Petit Puppy – The Cutest Store in New York?

The cooing can be heard all the way from 6th Avenue, a block away from Le Petit Puppy, possibly the most adorable store in all of New York City. This boutique pet shop, specializing in small breed, toy and teacup puppies, is unequivocally the “aww, I want one!” capital of the West Village. Check out the Christopher Street window display you’ll see why.  Look at these guys!  They could fit in your Fendi!

New York LOVES Ray-Bans

It’s not even news at this point — Ray-Ban Wayfarers have taken over New York City. It’s past tense. The glasses came, were worn, and are now commonplace. Hipsters, meatpacking types, upper east side yachting kids — everyone sports these glasses.  Although this couple came all the way from Savannah, Georgia, they knew exactly how to fit in.  I would have walked past them, same as the other million-odd Ray-Ban wearers, if they weren’t two of my best friends and founders of New Moon of Savannah, of course.
