Scenes from Manhattan’s High Line

The High Line, New York’s recently uncovered and renovated above ground train line, is a superb feature to photograph. Especially if you’re into flocks of tourists and lounging West Villagers. The lofted vantage point also provides new perspectives on New York City life. That’s what I wanted to explore. Here are just a few from a quick stroll the other day when I met up with a friend who is moving on from a job she’s held for six years. Good luck, Anna!

And the obligatory sunset shot (Without a filter this is the best it got.)

Winter Jam NYC

Did you know there are National and World Championships for trampolining?  A few of those champions took to the tramps in Central Park yesterday as Winter Jam attracted kids and adults alike to see the high flying show. There was also a snow boarding ramp, with performances throughout the afternoon. Visitors could watch the athletes or shop a variety of stands to buy their endorsed gear.

The Hudson is Frozen

The Hudson River really doesn’t need much to be major point of interest for New Yorkers and tourists alike. Since it’s frozen, though, the great shapes made by the ice make the views much more interesting. Check out this story of the Hudson freezing back in the day.

Love Your Lane: New York City Commuting Campaign

It seems that I missed a lot by leaving New York City on Memorial Day Weekend. Sure, it was the conclusion of Fleet Week and a remembrance of all those who have sacrificed their lives to protect this great country.  But, bigger than that, I missed the Doggie Pedal Parade! (A parade of people on bikes with their dogs either in the front baskets or with them some how or another.

And, when I saw this bicycle today all decorated and chained up on Barrow Street in the West Village, I realize that I have yet to mention the Love Your Lane campaign.

Love Your Lane

Incidentally, this bicycle was adorned with information on both the Love Your Lane campaign and the Doggie Pedal. I’d love to meet the owner. My guess is that they are a member or associated with Time’s Up!, New York City’s non-profit direct action environmental organization. For more than 20 years, they have worked to educate people about the environmental impacts of everyday decisions, from the food we buy to the means of transportation we use.

Time’s Up! can be found here. They offer group rides (silly or serious), environmental information, great T-shirts, bike repair workshops and an overall sense of belonging. Check them out either online or at their new space in Brooklyn at 99 South 6th Street off Bedford Avenue, right under the Williamsburg Bridge.

UPS Truck Parking Ticket by New York City Horse Police

Parking tickets are no fun in general.  But how bad is it that not only will this UPS truck driver return to his truck parked (illegally) at Greenwich St. and Morton to find a ticket, but to know that the ticket was given to him by horse police?  Nothing against policemen on horseback, but come on, it’s kind of embarrassing for the driver. Sorry buddy.
