Friday, December 11th, 12:30 PM: An unidentified Bleecker Street man was viciously attacked this Friday by an animal bearing resemblance to a winter coat and hat. From the photo below, the beast appears to be a new breed of bear, dog and raccoon, but there have been no such reports of tri-breeding. (We don’t even know how it would work). Also, the Bronx Zoo has not reported any animals missing.

Every once in a while I am stoped in my tracks by store window displays. This morning it was the Lucky Brand Jeans display on 22nd and fifth I learned that this conical straw hat, traditionally worn by farmers trying to shield the hot sun as they toil in the fields, is now apparently a hot display item for a little kid.

Can you imagine this family walking down fifth avenue? The trendy mom with her white leather purse and then the little kid tagging along in his Lucky Brand jeans, $40 t-shirt and a 笠帽, 竹笠 on his head?

It seems like new advertisements are constantantly popping up all over Manhattan. A new this, a sale on that. It’s really quite overwhelming. But for all the large scale ads I encounter I’ve never seen one being put up. Until this morning…

Walking this morning I came upon a cool vintage bike (some bikes are just old, others are vintage) on Waverly and Christopher that had a metal indian figure head coming off the front wheel fender. Thought it made a good shot. (Note: when I looked up the map to get Waverly and Christopher I saw that Magnolia Bakery is actually shown on the map at the same level as parks and the Empire State building. They’re not that good people!)

If you’re into antique bikes in New York, not just old crappy ones, check out this craigslist ad for Landmark Vintage Bikes on the lower east side. Seems like a decent deal though I’ve never been there myself.
OK. What’s the deal? I’ve been seeing graffiti of “Rod Stuart Loves the Hamptons” all over Manhattan. Apparently it’s in Brooklyn too. This shot here was taken near my office at Morton and Greenwich St.Note the misspelling of Stewart, a smart move for whoever is creating these works. I looked it up and Rod Stuart Loves the Hamptons has its own MySpace page. T-Shirts can be found at RareChic, which leads me to believe that it’s a brilliant artist’s marketing ploy. (Or someone is making a nice buck off of it.) And the shirt costs $73! For a t-shirt!

With the cold weather comes warm clothing. And with that warm clothing comes hats. Take a look at the picture below. Here you have your typical New York guy wearing nice leather shoes, tight jeans, a long jacket and a Davy Crocket racoon skin hat. What?

This is why I like New York fashion. Because you don’t have to be a woodsman to incorporate that style into your urban sheik attire. Mix and match. Live a little. But above all this winter, stay warm. And that’s exactly why this guy bought the hat. Because it’s warm. That’s it.
