This morning my New York City commute took me past the “Founded in 1838” sign above the C.O. Bigelow Pharmacy located at Avenue of the Americas (6th Ave.) between 8th and 9th (Google Map) . Turns out it’s America’s oldest apothecary.
C.O. Bigelow began as a neighborhood hub for personal care needs. Aparently Eleanor Roosevelt, Mark Twain and Thomas Edison, among other famous folk, have frequented the store. Twain swore by their lip balm. Today, the company has expanded, with stores in Ohio, Boston, Chicago, and NJ. They even have their own product line you can buy at any Bath and Body Works location.
