Halfway into my NYC commute this morning I came across a very interesting piece of advertising on the side of the Lenny’s on 9th and 6th. Contact information for a Manhattan kettlebell strength coach written right on a kettlebell chained to a stairwell on the side of the street. I thought, what the hell is kettlebell?
A kettlebell is a traditional Russian castiron weight used by weightlifters, measured (this is my favorite) in poods. Yes, one pood is a Russian system of weight equivalent to 36 pounds. There are also half-poods and other fractions of pood. The pood was abolished by the USSR in 1924 but has remained in use for things like kettlebells. Oh joy!
